When Georgina Baillie heard the careers of Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross were on the line, she told reporters she was “thrilled because justice has been done”.

Those are the words used by victims of crime, not the words of a £110-an-hour dominatrix should use to defend her “honour”.

But that sums up just how stupendously out of proportion Wossgate has become.

Britain has slumped into recession, soldiers are dying in Iraq and Goldman Sachs partners are walking away from financial carnage with multi-million pound bonuses, yet the inappropriate remarks of a couple of DJs have blown every other story out of the news this week.

There is no question Ross and Brand should have been hauled over the coals for their bully-boy harassment of 78- year-old actor Andrew Sachs.
By all accounts, he’s a sweet, decent man who was genuinely horrified by the foul-mouthed messages the evil twins left on his answer machine.

Poor Sachs was on the receiving end of two monumental egos left to swell unchecked.

For a long time now, Ross and Brand have been treading a thin line on decency.

But these messages tipped them way over the edge.

I suspect Ross was so desperate to ingratiate himself with the younger, cooler Brand, he lost all perspective.

Both men are brilliant, dangerous broadcasters. Throwing them into a studio together is like tossing a match into a petrol tank.

To then put a kid producer of 25 in charge of them was a recipe for disaster.

But apologies have been made, and accepted graciously by Sachs, jobs have gone and careers left in limbo.

It should be the end of the story.

But it’s not... because certain elements of the right-wing media have turned it into a war of morality.

Sachs himself now seems a little confused and taken aback by all the fuss.

As he should. What started out as two complaints from Radio Two listeners has now blown into a full-scale mob uprising against the BBC.
Even Gordon Brown and Have-A-Go Cameron have put their oar in.

This story must have been music to their ears when it broke.

What a perfect way for the Government to deflect attention away from the economy and for the Tories to knock Osborne off the front pages.

Never mind that the girl who had her honour besmirched by Ross and Brand turns out to be a dominatrix who humiliates willing “sex slaves”.

The multi-talented Georgina Baillie also performs in the burlesque dance troop Satan’s Sluts and has posed for several photos wearing nothing but a pair of lace knickers. Lord knows how she found the time to be so morally outraged by the upset caused to her grandfather - feelings that strangely deserted her the moment she jumped into bed with Brand.

Now the dust is settling on Wossgate we can all stand back and look at the carnage.

Brand has quit his radio show, Ross has quit as the hugely entertaining host of the Comedy Awards and is` out of action on the BBC for three months on unpaid leave.

Say what you like about Wossy, but I’ll miss him on Friday nights.
The saddest casualty of all is Lesley Douglas, the brilliant controller of Radio 2, who has fallen on her sword.

The BBC has more than dealt with this incident. It has quite rightly sent out the message to other young, renegade broadcasters that they overstep the mark at their peril.

It has drawn a clear line in the sand over decency. So enough’s enough.
The BBC has long nurtured the country’s finest and bravest stars and the most innovative programmes, making British broadcasting the envy of the world.

It would be a huge loss to us all if, after this rabid hysteria, the BBC became bogged down in censorship and boring programming just to please those shrill voices in the right-wing Press.
