Pinup Queen Bettie Page Hospitalized in Critical Condition

Iconic pinup queen Bettie Page, 85, has been hospitalized in Los Angeles after suffering a heart attack. She had initially been hospitalized with a serious case of pneumonia, but suffered a heart attack just before she was about to released on Tuesday. Her agent and lawyer Mark Roesler says that she is in the intensive care unit and that she is "critically ill."


Bettie Page, with her trademark raven-haired bangs and ridiculously shapely body (she was known as "the girl with the perfect figure"), is credited by some with helping to usher in the sexual revolution of the turbulent 1960s. Her boundary-pushing cheesecake photographs - which frequently showcased her in bikinis and lingerie and also included scenes of bondage and simulated S&M imagery - were so provocative that, in the 1950s, Congress called her to testify as part of their investigation into bondage and fetish magazines.

Betty Page was born in Nashville, Tennessee on April 23, 1923; she was the second of six children. Her childhood years were rough, and, apparently, she suffered abuse at the hands of both her parents. Her first modeling job was in San Francisco, where she modeled fur coats for the clients of a local furrier. Within a few years after this rather chaste gig, she was a full-fledged pin-up girl who appeared in such girlie magazines as Wink, Eyeful, Twitter and Beauty Parade. This led to centerfold spread in the January, 1955 issue of Playboy magazine, which catapulted her to international prominence.

Then Bettie Page disappeared from the public eye. There are conflicting reports as to what exactly transpired during this period of her life, but all accounts indicate that Bettie Page had a religious conversion, turned her life over to Jesus Christ, and may have worked as a secretary for a Christian organization, or as a missionary. There are also conflicting reports as to whether or not she suffered a mental breakdown during this period, whether or not she had violent outbursts and stabbed someone, and whether or not she spent time in a California mental institution.
