FIA president Max Mosley says someone out to get him in sex scandal

FIA president Max Mosley, whose participation in a sex party with five prostitutes was scandalously exposed by a British tabloid last March, implied in an interview that he was the victim of a deliberate attempt to oust him by someone within professional motorsports.


One of the prostitutes involved in the scandal was married to a British secret intelligence officer, who was paid a £25,000 fee (about $35,000) by the newspaper.

"I don't think an MI5 agent risks his career for only £25,000," Mosley told a German magazine. "He can't be that stupid. I suspect a thing or two, but I have no definite proof. There are a lot of people who would like to get rid of me. I'm in the way. I tried to cut the costs in Formula One drastically. In doing something like that, you step on a lot of people's toes. People who have a lot of money, people who don't want others with less money becoming their equals, people who can't wait to push the button that turns me off.

"Everyone in a high position, in politics or elsewhere, makes enemies. Always .... No matter how nice and honorable a trade might be, there's always someone who doesn't want you being the main figure."

On Wednesday in London, Mosley transfixed members of a Parliamentary Select Committee on Culture, Media & Sport when he was interviewed by them as part of their investigation into "Press Standards, Privacy and Libel," and in particular the need for any new personal-privacy legislation.

Mosley described how he had been engaged in sadomasochism for the past 45 years.

"Nobody knew," he said. "My closest friends didn't know. My wife didn't know. Nobody.

"[Seeing myself on the front-page of a tabloid for that] was the most terrible feeling. Like someone taking all your goods, all your money. In fact, it was worse. If someone takes away your dignity, you can never replace it. It's not that I'm ashamed of it. I'm not ashamed, for example, of my bodily functions, but I don't want them on the front page of a newspaper."
