Report: Iraqi gay men killed by horrific 'anal glue' torture

I have to warn you before you read this, it's one of the most distrubing things I've ever heard.

The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission  reports that prominent Iraqi human rights activist Yina Mohammad says Iraqi militia have deployed a form of torture against homosexuals by gluing their anuses shut and then forcing them to drink a substance that causes diarrhea, resulting in a long and painful death as their intestines and stomachs slowly burst.

Mohammad told Alarabiya.net:
Iraqi militias have deployed an unprecedented form of torture against homosexuals by using a very strong glue that will close their anus. The new substance is an Iranian-manufactured glue that if applied to the skin, sticks to it and can only be removed by surgery. After they glue the anuses of homosexuals, they give them a drink that causes diarrhea. Since the anus is closed, the diarrhea causes death. Videos of this form of torture are being distributed on mobile cellphones in Iraq."

Distributed on cellphones. So Iraqis consider this cruel practice entertaining? That's just sick by any standard.

According to Mohammad, for the past three weeks a crackdown on homosexuals has been going on, based on a religious decree that demands their death. Dozens have been targeted. She says that the persecution of homosexuals is not confined to the Shiite clerics. Some Sunni leaders have also declared the death penalty for sodomy on satellite channels.

There are photos and videos of tortured and executed gay Iraqi men circulating on the Internet. The photo above is the least gruesome I could find. If you want to see the brutality for yourself, do a Google search for "Iraq gay torture".

Keep in mind, the only "crime" these men have committed is being homosexual, or being considered homosexual by the Iraqi Sunni and Shiite militia.

The IGLHRC sent a letter to Iraqi Minister of Human Rights, Wijdan Salim, urging her to take action to protect her country's LGBT community. But with Iraq's current unrest, it's unlikely anything will happen to protect these people.

Homosexuality in Iraq was declared a crime by Sadaam Hussein in 2001 under pressure from clerics. Now that he's out of the picture, why does this law still exist?

Astonishingly, the US State Department denies that Iraq's government has executed any people since 2007, or that homosexuality is a crime there. Spokesman John Fleming, who has worked at the department's Iraqi Desk through the Bush presidency, said criminals now awaiting possible execution are there for crimes such as "terrorism, insurgency and kidnapping." He added that their sexual identity was irrelevant to the charges, and to the Iraqi people.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, however, told European Parliament last month that the persecution of gays and lesbians in Iraq is "something that we take very seriously". She added condemnation of Iraqi gay persecution was "condoned and protected."

This is the country the Bush administration created, and the Obama administration continues to support. President Obama has yet to speak out against this human rights outrage. With all the stories in the news about people being upset over past waterboarding, nobody seems to be talking about what's happening right now.

This is what Iraq considers "freedom"? How can we stand by and allow this kind of gruesome torture to persist in Iraq?

Nobody deserves to endure this level of suffering. Please go to Iraqi LGBT  to help stop the senseless execution of gay Iraqis.

You can also contact your Congressperson  to urge them to take action to stop this insanity.
