CANADA- Former call girl and dominatrix Darquise Johnson says she came back to Canada empty-handed after her abusive husband, Nolan, blew $800,000 of Doug Macklem's money on cars, travel and gambling

Testifying in her own defence, Johnson -- she also uses her maiden name, L'Ecuyer -- painted herself as the victim of a violent, controlling and spendthrift husband.

She claimed Nolan Johnson, a Jamaican-born drug dealer, was the puppet master behind the elaborate fraud. Johnson said she never agreed to take part in the scheme.

"The way I look at it I was Nolan's puppet," Johnson, 31, told court in testimony regularly interrupted by tears. "I did as I was told. I did as I was told and I couldn't do anything about it or I would get hit or pushed down the stairs."

When she resisted, Johnson testified, she was threatened with being "disappeared" or she was beaten, kicked or choked.

Johnson said she returned to Canada from Jamaica with only a bag of clothes and was arrested as she stepped off the plane at Pearson International Airport in June 2007.

She called her life in Jamaica "a living hell." Nolan, she said, had blown all of Macklem's money and the couple was living with pirated water and electricity in a remote Jamaican town.
Nolan only allowed her to come back to Canada, she said, because she promised to return to stripping and send money to Jamaica.
In his cross-examination, Crown attorney Jason Neubauer accused Johnson of fabricating the story.

"It's the next lie in a series of lies," he suggested. Johnson denied it.
Neubauer then referred her to a deposition in a civil case in which she said under oath that she first collected $67,000 from Macklem because he was in arrears for escort services.

Johnson, however, said she was still covering for her husband when she gave that evidence. "When I first came back, he was still telling me what to say and do," she said.

Johnson told court that she is now telling the full truth about the case because she has finally swallowed her fear.

"I don't care what happens to me," she said. "I can get driven off the road, I don't care. It's if something happens to my family, that's what scares me. I know it's a possibility."

Johnson is on trial for her part in what the Crown contends was an elaborate and sophisticated scam that devastated Macklem, an Ottawa computer systems analyst who uses in a wheelchair.
She has pleaded not guilty to fraud, extortion, money laundering, conspiracy to commit fraud and possession of proceeds obtained by crime.

Johnson told court that she met Nolan in 2001 while she was working as a stripper. They married in January, 2004, and Nolan, she said, pushed her into the escort business six months later.

"I was uncomfortable with that idea but he kept pushing," she said. He built a website for her and drove her to her first appointment, for which she was paid $300 even though she was too nervous to have sex, Johnson testified.

She said she turned over all of the money she earned from being a call girl -- she later became a dominatrix -- to Nolan. She saw an average of five clients a week.

Johnson told court that she began to see Macklem as a client in August, 2004 and that he soon became a "regular." "He was an OK person, a nice person, easygoing, a good sense of humour," she told court.

Macklem has testified that he invested in a resort villa in the Dominican Republic in April, 2006, because he thought it would form part of his life together with Johnson.

But Johnson said Macklem wanted the place for himself. She said she did not lead him to believe they would live there together.

Johnson testified that she did not tell Macklem she was married because she didn't share that kind of information with clients, nor did she tell him she was travelling to Jamaica with her husband -- not the Dominican Republic -- for the same reason.

Macklem paid for that trip.

Johnson said it was Nolan's idea to call Macklem and tell him she had found a property, even though none existed. He continued to come up with ideas to take more money from Macklem. "He (Nolan) was money hungry and he would stop at nothing," Johnson testified.

She said she didn't want to take part in the scheme, but Nolan told her not to interfere with his moneymaking, she said.

Nolan Johnson was the one who communicated with Macklem by e-mail and it was her job, she said, to play along and pick up the money.

As the fraud escalated, Johnson said she didn't go to the police because she was afraid her husband would target her mother or family. She didn't warn Macklem of the scam, she said, for the same reason.

During cross-examination, Johnson told court that she could have dumped Macklem as a client after he made his $67,000 payment for what he believed was a Dominican villa. She could have justified the payment, Johnson said, as arrears but she decided to continue her relationship with Macklem because he had told her he would commit suicide if she wasn't in his life.

"Because I was trying to be nice to Doug, I ended up in this whirlwind," she said.
