Alexander McQueen's 'sadomasochistic' designs to be celebrated in new book

USA- NEW YORK- He was at once creative genius and enfant terrible. But too late friends and colleagues came to realise Alexander McQueen was also a tortured soul. When he took his own life in February last year, the fashion industry lost one of its greatest talents.
And now, as testament to the indelible mark his breathtaking and controversial work had on the fashion world, the Metropolitan Museum in New York is set to release a stunning book celebrating his career to be published in conjunction with an exhibition at the museum.
The book, entitled Savage Beauty, will focus on the most iconic and acclaimed designs of the designer’s prolific career, as well as delving into the details behind his technical virtuosity and the rebellious subversion of traditional tailoring that became his trademark.
The museum said: ‘His fashions both challenged and expanded the conventional parameters of clothing beyond utility to a compelling expression of culture, politics, and identity.’
Images in the book include many of the dramatic works McQueen created in his flamboyant style, with striking silhouettes, rich fabrics and vibrant colours.
Clothes and accessories reveal what McQueen referred to as his 'sadomasochistic' tendencies towards his designs. Clothes often bind models' hands together, masks obscure the face. Heels are fetishistic in form and height: some impossibly contorting the feet to create a hoof-like shape that renders the wearer almost hobbled.
The designer played with history, politics, gender, bondage and fetishism as themes in his collections - something which won him as much outrage as it did acclaim. One such collection is the now infamous 1995 tartan show that McQueen christened Highland Rape, a body of work that attracted controversy not only for its name, but for what onlookers thought was a tampon dangling from the back of one of the dresses.
The item, according to a report in Vogue, has now been revealed to be an innocuous watch chain, thanks to the Museum’s acquisition and closer inspection of the piece.
'It destroyed one of the myths,' the curator of the museum's exhibition, Andrew Bolton said with a smile, 'but then again, there are so many myths surrounding McQueen.'
The book will will also feature a much-anticipated interview with Sarah Burton, McQueen’s friend and design aide who took over at the helm of the fashion label following McQueen's untimely death.
