Spring 2013 plays with creative prints and dominatrix gear

USA - Midway through the spring 2013 season of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and it looks like spring will be filled with dreamy artist prints and dominatrix influences (should we blame "Fifty Shades of Grey").

Lady-like hemlines, hitting at or just below the knee, continue to dominate. But perhaps the lengths are staying longer to tame the look of vampy details above the waist. Short-short hemlines coupled with lingerie details tends to lead down a rather slutty slope.

Instead, the most prevalent looks have been mature, sophisticated and in-your-face sexy. There's little on the runways that leans toward the coy.

When sweet-faced designers like Jason Wu, known for designing soft, embellished über-feminine gowns for the First Lady and society elite starts incorporating S&M details, you know something's afoot.

Wu played with the harness belt details that cropped up last fall and stuck around for spring. Wu even collaborated with La Perla on bras for the show because so many were visible through the sheer or laser cut tops.

Victoria Beckham also played up the bras under her sheer tops and dresses.

And though the details at Wu were suggestive of a bad girl, they weren't overdone. There was overt sex-appeal to the line, but it felt playful. Wu's brand of sexy girl lives next door but she winks at you in the hall and she'd loan you a cup of sugar, if she had it ... but we doubt that she cooks.

And just to touch on some of the artistic fabrics, we have to give praise to Felipe Oliveira Baptista of Lacoste for making the line synonymous with Polo shirts and tennis resorts an urban street vibe. The fabrics were cleverly patterned with double-take influence. Look close and you'll see how tennis balls, rackets, alligators and folded Polo shirt images were layers and blended to create new prints that look abstract at first.

Nicole Miller incorporated "techno TV" and "space lace" prints into her collection along with a "black and white pixelated jacquard" (which looked more like a tribal weave). For spring 2013, she dubbed her line "Batteries not included," inspired by the juxtaposition of improbable things. For instance, 80s surrealist art, "digital nature" and sci-fi.

Designers taking advantage of new technology that makes designing fabric easier and more affordable were everywhere on the runway from Ruffian's version of toile with hipsters on modern city streets to Rebecca Taylor's version of a stylized Hawaiian floral.

Stay tuned for our fashion week round-up Sunday, Sept. 23 and more tidbits on trends including the ones we can't wait to shop for in stores and the ones we don't want to see coming toward us on a city street.
