Ford Ad Controversy: The Shocking Bondage Ad

USA - Ford ad controversy in the growing India market is causing deep social shockwaves across the country as a series of incidents involving violence against women sparked desperate protests for change.
Ford India ad agency JWT India, subsidiary of WPP, recently released a print ad campaign intended to promote the new Ford Figo compact car. The print ads featured cartoons that depect women bound and gagged in the trunk as well as the grinning caricature of Italy's Silvio Berlusconi in the driver's seat. The highly suggestive ad delivered the following message: Leave your worries behind with Figo's extra-large boot (trunk)."
Displaying, and perhaps even condoning, the abduction of women, the shockingly controversial ad caused uproar online. What's more, the ads were released shortly after a young female student died on a bus after a brutal gang rape.
Addressing the controversy, Ford marketing chief Jim Farley addressed the media on Wednesday at the New York International Auto Show.
"All of us at Ford and JWT were as shocked as you were. We are extremely sorry about the incident... It is not acceptable."
Ad agency JWT India owned up to the insensitive ad release. More specifically, the incident prompted the resignation of industry veteran JWT chief creative officer and managing partner Bobby Pawar, Blue Hive creative director Vijay Simha Vellanki.
"These were never intended for paid publication, were never requested by our Ford client, and should never have been created, let alone uploaded to the Internet," stated JWT India. "These posters were created by individuals within the agency and did not go through the normal review and oversight process."
"The industry is under serious stress right now on this issue because Mr. Pawar is such a respected figure," explained Leo Burnett India executive vice president Nitesh Thattasery. "It is a very severe step, asking someone of Bobby Pawar's stature to leave.
""The industry will be far, far more cautious in making sure that in the future no ad goes for an award without clear client approval," Mr. Thattasery said. "Award bodies will also be more careful in the future that the unreleased work submitted by agencies has explicit clearance from the client."
