UK - DERBY - “AS soon as the judge heard the brothels had made £640,000 in 14 months, I knew I was going to jail.”

For Vanessa Coleman, that sentence brought a close to her time in the sex industry.

Now 68, she spends her time promoting her memoirs and campaigning for UKIP.

She had spent 10 years working as a dominatrix, administering beatings and giving men the outlet to express their hidden sexual desires.

But, at the age of 48, how did she move from being a successful businesswoman into running one of the most lucrative brothels in the UK?

The story starts in Derby.

People in the city would not know Vanessa by her current name. She was born on June 22, 1946, and christened Mavis Ann Thornhill.

Her parents brought her up in a three-bedroom council house on Coleridge Street. Her father, John, worked for Rolls-Royce as a progress chaser. Her mother, Verona, had various part-time jobs before becoming the manager at city-centre shop Renmores.

Taking on the job meant that the young Mavis was left needing to look after brother Gordon and sister Marian. She attended the Henry Cavendish School and was taken on by her mother as a Saturday girl at Renmores.

It was working at the shop that exposed her to the world outside Derby and it was while working there that she met her first husband, Bill.

He was the general manager and asked Mavis to join him at a new company as a secretary in London.

She moved to the capital in the spring of 1963 but was soon back in Derby after her affair with Bill was discovered by his wife.

Back in Derby, she worked as hostess in a nightclub before moving back down to London and eventually marrying Bill, with whom she had her first child, Mark.

Together they ran a number of successful businesses, including a chauffeur company rubbing shoulders with the likes of rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival.

After the breakup of her marriage to Bill, she ran a restaurant before meeting her partner, Tom, and moving to Bournemouth.

It was Tom who would, inadvertently, introduce her to a world that led her to her jailing.

Tom had qualifications as a fitness instructor and, to earn a bit more cash, Mavis found him a massage course.

A business she was running at the time went to the wall and Tom decided it was time for him to use his massage skills.

He managed a few regular customers but most of the callers were after much more than just a massage and Mavis soon had the chance to learn a new skill.

She said: “Tom was a very a straight man and I used to answer the phone.

“Eventually, he got fed up with it and stopped but the phone kept ringing and, one day, this very posh man asked if I did spanking.
“I said that Tom was no longer working. He said that I sounded nice and that he would like to meet me.

“He explained that he was a transvestite and that he would come to clean the house.

“I told Tom and he laughed but backed me up all way.”

Her client taught her the art of spanking and she was soon advertising her business looking for “naughty boys” to be “disciplined”.

And, thus, Mavis became Vanessa - she had always hated her given name and, once her father died, she changed it. And Madam Vanessa sounded much better than Madam Mavis. She said: “Mavis was always the butt of every joke about simple-minded women.”

She worked from home in Bournemouth but, after an encounter with a groping young man, Tom put a message in the window asking for staff for a massage business so there would be more than one person in the house. Vanessa then started another brothel from another house.

She said: “I kept on some of old clients but most I passed on to the other girls and, eventually, I was just running a businesses like I had done before.”

Because of Vanessa’s favourable rates for the girls - she took 40% and the girls 60% - the business became one of the biggest in the area.

She said: “It was after the third armed robbery, which I think was my competitors trying to get rid of me, that I was ready to leave.”
Vanessa was almost out of the door when the police raided the businesses on May 19, 2005. She said: “I had only spoken to the police two weeks before. They told me that I needed better security.

“I couldn’t understand it. I had always had good relations with the police. They even tried to get me to act as an informant but they had taken me out of the trade and I could tell them nothing.”

She was sentenced to eight months for running the brothels as well as possessing counterfeit goods.

On appeal, her sentence was reduced to two months.

Her book, An Accidental Madam, can be bought on Amazon or via her website, www.accidentalmadam.com.
